Moises Caicedo's possible contract with Liverpool is in doubt as Chelsea are looking forward to hijacking the deal, Sky Sports reported on Friday.
All in all, Caicedo to Liverpool was a done deal with head coach Jurgen Klopp confirming that the Reds have reached an agreement with Brighton for the transfer of Caceido for a reported British record fee of £110 million.
“I got told I can confirm a deal with (Brighton) is agreed,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.
Caicedo has been wanted by Chelsea for a long time but they were beaten by Liverpool as Brighton had set a deadline for bid. And now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the player has informed the Reds that he wants to join Chelsea.
In the last decade, Klopp criticised the idea of spending millions to sign a player and stated that he wants to do it a different way, but the transfer market has changed and so did Klopp.
“Everything changed. Do I like it? No. Did I realise I was wrong? Yes,” Klopp said. “I’m not blaming anyone but it’s just the market. In the end, we as a club have to make sure that, with our resources, we get the best possible player.”
Liverpool wanted Jude Bellingham as well but the player joined Real Madrid.
Also, the unexpected departures of Liverpool’s captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League forced the club to invest in a midfielder.
“We are a club with not endless resources, so things we didn’t expect, a couple of things happening in the summer,” said Klopp.
“We didn’t think about that before the summer, to be honest and when it happened, we gave it a go and obviously, the club was really stretched there, to be honest.”
On the other hand, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said that the big clubs cannot buy their soul.
"I've already forgotten Moises," said De Zerbi. "I am really proud for the players we have in the squad. We want to keep improving. The credit goes to the club."
"Bigger clubs can buy players but they can't buy our soul and our spirit," he added, before also saying: "We don't have enough yet, we need to complete the squad. I want players who want to come here.
"We are Brighton, we achieved a big target last year - the same as Liverpool, better than Chelsea. I would like players who are proud to play in Brighton."
